From the By-Laws of the Company, Article IV, Section II, Sub-Section (C)(3):
Truck Captains - shall, in conjunction with the Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chiefs, train the personnel assigned to their vehicle in the proper operation and upkeep of that vehicle. In the absence of the Fire Chief and the Assistant Chiefs, the first Truck Captain at the scene of an emergency shall be in command until a superior officer arrives, is apprised of the situation and assumes command.
It is the responsibility of each Truck Captain to see that these duties are fulfilled throughout the year.
The truck to which you have been appointed as Captain shall:
- be prepared to respond at all times;
- have three complete sets of turnout gear (Engine 2, Engine 3 and Rescue 7 only);
- have fire gloves in all coats;
- have all equipment clean, neat, and stored in its proper place;
- be checked after each call to ensure that the vehicle is ready for the next call; and
- be kept clean inside and outside.
In addition, you shall:
- Plan and command at least four hours of drills per year, two hours of which must be on your truck;
- Be responsible for training all Members in the operation and general knowledge of the truck, and to ensure that your assigned Lieutenant (if any) is trained and prepared to assume the position, in the event of your absence;
- Complete a monthly vehicle inspection report, including S.C.B.A. and portable equipment, and submit to the Chief no later than the current month's Line Officers' meeting;
- Keep your truck bay clean, including the glass overhead doors;
- Immediately report to any Chief officer on any equipment that is missing or damaged;
- Immediately report to any Chief officer on any mechanical problem;
- Prepare a list of items desired ("Wish List"), and submit to the Chief no later than March 1st of each year; and
- Prepare an inventory of equipment on his/her truck, and submit to the Chief no later than March 1st of each year.
If any Truck Captain experiences resistance or other difficulty in obtaining the cooperation and/or support of any Member, it is to be reported to a chief immediately.
Failure to fulfill these duties may result in the removal of a Truck Captain from the position, at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
